AI for Everyone

$55

with Ariel Strong

Calendar Jun 2, 2025 at 10 am

This course is a fast, easy way for the nontechnical user to get comfortable using free AI tools to increase their business or personal productivity and creativity.

You need a laptop you can bring to class and you need to be comfortable using it. The course will take you from zero knowledge of how to create “prompts”–simple text instructions to an AI service–to an intermediate level of prompt expertise by the end of the course.

You will find that you don't need to be a great writer, designer, or marketer to create a solid business plan or marketing campaign. You don't have to be "artistic" or "super-creative" to make great social media posts or create a fun, illustrated storybook for your child or grandchild.

Learning to prompt will open a whole new world of self-expression and a greater ability connect with others. You will be able to:

1) Boost your work, freelancing skill set, or school productivity

2) Learn a new language or other skill more quickly

3) Easily explore new frontiers in art, design, and creative writing

The course includes a free ebook with examples, customizable prompting templates, helpful tips, and info on additional AI services and resources. 30 minutes at the end of each class will be free-form - devoted to interaction, questions, discussion, and collaboration.

Class meets Mondays and Thursdays, June 2, 5, 9, 12 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Instructor Ariel Strong is a techie who loves to introduce nontechnical folks to all of the fun and creative possibilities that recent advances in computing have made possible. She has worked in the field of software engineering since the early 1990s, and for the last eight years, has been specifically focused on Data Analytics and AI.

Ariel is the founder of FireFlight, a local tech startup. FireFlight brings AI strategy consulting, training, and process automation to individuals and small businesses, and conducts wildfire prevention work through fire risk assessments and prevention action plans.

Playing with Poetry

$25

with Linda Maria Alvarado

Calendar Jun 19, 2025 at 9 am

Poetry is powerful, personal, and it can be playful, too! Drawing on the idea of fulfillment represented by the upcoming summer solstice and the historic events of Juneteenth, we’ll practice some basic poetry techniques, get outside for inspiration from the natural world, and then let our learnings and laughter fly onto our papers! This workshop is ideal for individuals seeking to develop or expand their writing style, or for families looking for a unique activity to do together. One thing is for sure – we will have fun and see writing poetry in a fresh, new way! Finally, participants will have the opportunity to type their poems using decorative papers on vintage typewriters to create keepsakes to take home. Participants should bring a notebook and pen, but leave stuffy notions of fancy literature behind.

Instructor Linda Maria Alvarado made her first publication, a family newsletter, when she was thirteen and has been writing ever since. Fast forward (a few!) years, and she completed a certificate in creative writing from UCLA Extension in 2024 and can now officially state that she can “write pretty.” As further proof of her claim, she currently has a poem included in the Museum of Northern Arizona’s Poetry Maps exhibit and is serving as a poet-in-residence there as well. She has a BA in Fine Arts, MA in Anthropology, and her business, Paperclip Poetry, provides custom poems at events throughout Northern Arizona.
