Comet Walk: Historic Boat Tour

Free

with Tom Martin

Calendar Jul 22, 2025 at 9 am

Join Colorado River boating historian Tom Martin for a tour of the historic boat collection at the Museum Collection, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park.

This collection has one of Julius Stone’s 1909 boats, Emery Kolb’s 1911 EDITH, the 1923 USGS boat MARBLE, David Rust’s 1920’s canvas canoes, Norm Nevills 1938 WEN used on the Dr. Elzada Clover Expedition, Alexander “Zee” Grant’s 1941 folding kayak ESCALANTE, Big Ed Hudson’s 1949 ESMERALDA II, and Moulty Fulmer’s 1954 GEM, the first decked McKenzie River dory to run Grand Canyon. That’s not all! See a 1950’s era rubber raft used by Georgie White, the 1960 Jet Boats DOCK and WEE RED, Walter Kirschbaum’s 1960 fiberglass kayak, Pat Reilly’s 1962 dory SUSIE II, Dock Marston’s 1963 Sportyak, and two contemporary plastic kayaks paddled through Grand Canyon by children.

Transportation is not provided. Directions to our meeting location outside the Park, and other event details, will be sent out prior to the date. We recommend getting a folding camp chair to bring along since there is no group seating in the museum.

While this is a free event, each participant will be responsible for their own Park entrance fees. There may be opportunities for some carpooling from the meeting location into the Park.

Intro to Linoleum Block Relief Printmaking

$100

with Skyler Dunfey

Calendar Jul 28, 2025 at 9 am

Join us for a hands-on printmaking class where you'll learn the art of linoleum block relief printing! In this beginner-friendly workshop you'll learn how to design, carve, transfer your image onto linoleum, tear paper, and print your own custom artwork using linoleum blocks, carving tools, and water soluble ink. You'll also learn how to sign your prints following traditional printmaking practices. Whether you’re interested in making prints for framing, cards, or even future stamp designs, this class offers a fun and creative introduction to a timeless printmaking method. You'll leave with finished prints, your hand-carved block for future use, and the skills to keep creating on your own.

Instructor Skyler Dunfey is an artist and teacher with over a decade of experience. Her focus is on graphic design, printmaking, and jewelry making/metalsmithing.  As a Maine native who takes every opportunity to spend time outside, she is inspired by the natural surroundings. She brings nature's intricate patterns into her artwork to inspire others to see the complexities of nature in a new light. As an instructor with over 10 years of teaching experience, Skyler creates a welcoming and hands-on learning environment, helping students develop confidence and creativity.

At the Orme School she served as the Art Director, Assistant Dean of Students, and the Director of Experiential Learning.  She majored in studio art and with minors in education and psychology.  She sells her work through SkyJune Designs and also teaches jewelry-making classes to share her passion.

Class meets Monday, July 28, Wednesday, July 30, and Thursday, July 31; from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
